Variation | O Level Mathematics 4024 & IGCSE Mathematics 0580 | Detailed Free Notes To Score An A Star (A*)
- Variation means how an increase or decrease in one thing affects another thing
- Direct variation means that one thing increasing will increase the other thing as well
- For example, the number of houses created is directly proportional and variated with amount of raw material
- Inverse variation means that increase in one thing reduces the other, for example, the price of product and the customers who will buy it are negatively or inversely variated
- If you increase the price then the customers will fall as less people will afford the product.
- For direct proportion, we use the formula y=kx, where k is the constant.
- To find K, we will put one pair of y and x
- For inverse proportion, we use y = k/x, and we put one pair of y and x (or whatever is the name of the variables) to ensure that we can get the value of k.
- We can also say
- y is directly proportional to the square of x
- So y=kx^2
- We can also say
- y is directly proportional to the cube of x so we can say y= kx^3
- But the main concept is the same. No other rocket science in this chapter.
