What you need to know
- A conclusion must match the population, variables, and design described.
- Random assignment strengthens causal conclusions; random sampling strengthens generalization.
- A finding can weaken a claim without proving the opposite claim.
- Small or unrepresentative samples require cautious language.
The AYLOTI method
- Name what was measured and who was studied.
- Identify whether the design was observational or experimental.
- Compare the claim’s scope with the study’s scope.
- Choose wording that reflects the evidence’s actual strength.

Worked example
Researchers randomly assigned volunteers to study with music or silence; the silence group scored higher. What conclusion is justified?
- Random assignment makes the groups comparable.
- The manipulated variable was study sound.
- The result supports a causal statement for similar volunteers under these conditions.
Answer: Studying in silence caused higher scores than studying with music for participants in this experiment.
Common SAT traps
- Generalizing from volunteers to every student.
- Claiming why silence helped when the mechanism was not tested.
- Treating a non-random survey as a controlled experiment.
Quick check
Can a study of 40 university volunteers directly establish what all teenagers will do?
No. Its population and sampling method do not support that broad generalization.
