Using a Calculator
O Level and IGCSE Mathematics Cheat Sheet – 1.14 Using a Calculator
Efficient Calculator Use – Key Rules
- Plan before entering: Write down the formula first.
- Use brackets to keep correct order of operations.
- Avoid rounding mid-calculation — round only the final answer.
- Clear memory or previous entries before a new calculation.

Entering Values Correctly
- Mixed units → same unit before entry.
- Time: 2 h 30 min = 2.5 h (because 30/60 = 0.5).
- Angles: 2° 30′ 0″ = 2.5° (because 30/60 = 0.5°).
- Fractions: Use fraction button or brackets for numerator/denominator.
- Powers/roots: Use dedicated buttons (x², √, ^, xʸ).
Interpreting Calculator Displays
- Money: 4.8 means $4.80, not $4.08.
- Time (decimal hours): 3.25 h = 3 h + (0.25 × 60) min = 3 h 15 min.
- Scientific notation: 2.3E5 means 2.3 × 10⁵.
- Recurring decimals: Store in memory to avoid rounding error in later steps.
Practical Entry Examples
- Brackets in fractions:
(12 + 3) ÷ (8 − 5) → Enter as(12 + 3) ÷ (8 − 5)or(15) ÷ (3). - Power & root:
5³ =5 ^ 3= 125, √144 =√144= 12. - Angles:
sin(30°) → Make sure calculator is in DEG mode.

Exam Special Tips
- Always check calculator mode (DEG/RAD for angles).
- Store intermediate results in memory (M+, MR) to reduce re-typing.
- For large/small numbers, use scientific notation mode to avoid input errors.
- If the answer seems unrealistic, recheck entry — especially brackets and powers.
Common Mistakes & Confusions
- Misreading 4.8 as 4.08 in money problems.
- Forgetting to convert minutes to hours or vice versa.
- Using rounded intermediate values in multi-step problems.
- Entering subtraction incorrectly when negatives are involved.
