Exam Strategy for O Level & IGCSE Biology Alternate to Practical (Paper 6)
✅ Before the Exam
- Revise all standard practicals:
- Food tests, osmosis, enzyme activity, respiration, microscope use, graphs, and experiment design.
- Memorize reagents, observations, variables, and controls.
- Practice past paper questions:
- Focus on drawing, labeling, structured answers, and data interpretation.
- Master formulas:
- Magnification = image size / actual size
- Rate = 1 / time
- % change = (final – initial)/initial × 100
- Actual size = image size / magnification
- Prepare your tools:
- Sharp HB pencils
- Ruler
- Eraser
✅ During the Exam
Time Management
| Task | Recommended Time |
|---|---|
| Diagrams | 7–8 minutes each |
| Graphs | 6–8 minutes |
| Data/short structured Qs | 1–2 minutes each |
| Experiment design Qs | 5–7 minutes |
| Final checking | Last 5–10 minutes |
Reading the Question
- Underline command words (e.g., state, describe, explain, calculate)
- Identify what is being tested: observation, method, explanation, or data
- Check number of marks to guide how many points to write
Answering Strategy
- Always refer to data when available
- Quote units with every measurement
- Label diagrams with pencil and ruler
- Use full sentences unless tables or diagrams are asked
- For comparisons, refer to both sides (e.g., “higher in A than B”)
Drawing Diagrams
- Use clear pencil lines, no shading
- Label horizontally with a ruler
- Include title and magnification
Graphs
- Label both axes with units
- Choose an appropriate scale (evenly spaced)
- Plot points accurately and draw a smooth best-fit line or curve
- Title the graph clearly
Experiment Design
- Always include:
- Aim
- Independent, dependent, controlled variables
- Step-by-step method
- Control setup
- Repeat for reliability
- Safety precautions
Short Answers
- Be direct and precise
- Use scientific terms: e.g., enzyme, diffusion, active site, turgid, denatured
- Explain cause-effect when asked (don’t just describe)
- Avoid vague phrases like “it changed” or “it worked better”
Final 5–10 Minutes
- Recheck:
- Units and labels
- Whether every graph and diagram has a title
- You answered all parts of multi-part questions
- All blank lines are filled with something sensible
✅ Golden Rules for Full Marks
- Quote data in all explanation-based questions
- Always include a control in experiment design
- For food tests, state: reagent, method, observation, conclusion
- Label at least 4 structures in diagrams
- Never leave a question blank
