IGCSE / O Level Computer Science Cheat Sheet
Topic: 6.1 Automated Systems
🤖 What is an Automated System?
- A system that performs tasks automatically using hardware and software, with minimal human intervention.
🔁 Key Components
| Component | Function |
|---|---|
| Sensor | Collects real-world data (e.g. temperature, light, motion) |
| Microprocessor | Processes input data and makes decisions |
| Actuator | Carries out physical action (e.g. turning on a motor) |
🔄 Process Cycle
- Sensor detects input from the environment
- Microprocessor processes data and checks conditions
- Actuator is activated if criteria are met
- System repeats or shuts off based on logic
🧪 Example Scenarios
| Scenario | Sensor Used | Actuator Action |
|---|---|---|
| Street lighting | Light sensor | Turns light ON/OFF |
| Smart irrigation | Moisture sensor | Activates water pump |
| Industrial robot | Pressure/infrared sensor | Moves robotic arm |
| Thermostat | Temperature sensor | Switches heating ON/OFF |
✅ Advantages of Automation
- Faster and more efficient than humans
- Reduces human error
- Can operate 24/7
- Consistent and repeatable outputs
- Suitable for hazardous environments
⚠️ Disadvantages of Automation
- High initial setup cost
- Job displacement
- Lacks human decision-making flexibility
- Requires ongoing maintenance
- Not suitable for unpredictable tasks
🔁 Areas of Use
| Sector | Application Examples |
|---|---|
| Industry | Assembly lines, robotic arms |
| Transport | Self-driving systems, traffic control |
| Agriculture | Automated irrigation, drone-based spraying |
| Gaming | AI-driven characters and systems |
| Science | Automated experiments and observations |
| Weather | Automated climate monitoring stations |
| Lighting | Motion-sensor or light-dependent activation |
