Each Question Attempt Method and Chain Development
GENERAL GOLDEN RULES
- Sociology marking schemes reward:
- sociological terminology
- development
- application
- balance in evaluation
- conclusions/judgements
- Every developed point = Point + Explain + Example/Effect.
- Never just list.
- If question says “explain”, ALWAYS develop.
- If question says “evaluate/discuss”, ALWAYS give both sides.
- If question says “using source”, directly quote or reference source wording.
- Write in short analytical paragraphs, not giant essays.
- Use connectives:
- “This means that…”
- “As a result…”
- “Therefore…”
- “This leads to…”
- “For example…”
2 MARK DEFINE QUESTIONS
Examples:
- Define role
- Define caste system
- Define digital surveillance
Technique:
1 mark
- Partial/basic definition.
2 marks
- Clear sociological definition with precise wording.
Formula
TERM + sociological meaning + key feature.
Example Structure
“Digital surveillance is the use of digital technology to monitor and control people’s behaviour.”
NOT:
“Digital surveillance is CCTV.”
Why?
Because examples alone usually only get partial marks.
2 MARK “GIVE TWO EXAMPLES” QUESTIONS
Examples:
- Give two examples of youth subcultures
- Give two forms of wealth
- Give two examples of secondary evidence
Technique:
- Just state two correct examples.
- No explanation needed.
- One line each.
- Don’t waste time developing.
Best Format
- Goths
- Punks
Simple. Fast. Efficient.
4 MARK “EXPLAIN ONE STRENGTH AND ONE LIMITATION”
Technique:
This paper LOVES:
- Point
- Development
Structure
Strength
- Identify strength
- Explain WHY it is a strength
Limitation
- Identify limitation
- Explain WHY it is a limitation
Formula
Point → Why → Effect on research
Example Layout
Strength:
Non-participant observation reduces the Hawthorne Effect because people may behave naturally if they do not realise they are being observed. This increases validity.
Limitation:
Researchers cannot ask participants why they behave in certain ways. This reduces understanding and validity.
That is EXACTLY how the mark scheme rewards development.
4 MARK SOURCE QUESTIONS
Examples:
- Explain two reasons triangulation was useful using Source A
Technique:
BIGGEST RULE:
USE THE SOURCE DIRECTLY.
Structure Per Point
Source detail + sociological explanation.
Formula
“In Source A…” + explain significance.
Example
“In Source A, researchers used both questionnaires and interviews. This allowed both quantitative and qualitative data to be collected, giving a more complete understanding of women’s experiences.”
WITHOUT source reference = lower marks.
6 MARK “EXPLAIN THREE WAYS” QUESTIONS
Examples:
- Explain three ways identity is affected
- Explain three feminist criticisms
- Explain three ways lack of power affects people
Technique:
This is the MOST repetitive structure in the paper.
MARK SCHEME LOGIC
1 mark = identify point
1 mark = develop point
So:
You need:
3 explained paragraphs.
NOT 6 short bullets.
PERFECT STRUCTURE
Paragraph 1
Point
Explain
Mini example
Paragraph 2
Point
Explain
Mini example
Paragraph 3
Point
Explain
Mini example
Formula
Point → Why/how → Effect/example
Example
“Women may still face a glass ceiling despite equality laws. This means they struggle to reach senior positions because employers may still hold sexist attitudes.”
That development gets the second mark.
8 MARK “DISCUSS THE VIEW” QUESTIONS
Examples:
- Society is socially constructed
- Societies are becoming culturally diverse
Technique:
These are NOT evaluation essays like 14 markers.
They want:
- developed points
- evidence/examples
- sociological concepts
NOT necessarily counterarguments.
STRUCTURE
Introduction
1–2 lines defining issue.
Main Body
3 developed sociological points.
Each paragraph:
- Point
- Explanation
- Sociological evidence/example
- Link back to question
BEST APPROACH
Use:
- theories
- studies
- real examples
- sociological language
Example Connectors
- “This suggests…”
- “This demonstrates…”
- “This supports the view because…”
10 MARK EVALUATE QUESTIONS
Examples:
- Random sampling is best
Technique:
This is FULL evaluation.
Mark scheme specifically requires:
- arguments FOR
- arguments AGAINST
- conclusion
PERFECT STRUCTURE FOR 10 MARKERS
Intro
Define issue briefly.
FOR SIDE
Paragraph 1 developed
Paragraph 2 developed
AGAINST SIDE
Paragraph 3 developed
Paragraph 4 developed
Conclusion
Direct judgement.
DEVELOPMENT FORMULA
Point
→ Explain
→ Sociological concept
→ Example/effect
→ Link to question
CRITICAL EXAMINER RULE
ONE-SIDED ANSWERS ARE CAPPED.
The mark scheme literally states this.
So if you only argue one side:
You instantly lose high-band marks.
12 MARK RESEARCH METHODS QUESTION
This is the MOST technical question in the paper.
It is marked in THREE separate bands:
- Methods/evidence
- Reasons
- Application to context
Most students fail because they forget CONTEXT.
PERFECT STRUCTURE
Method 1
- Name method
- Sampling type
- How used
- Why useful
- Link to investigation
Method 2
Same structure.
Secondary Evidence
- Name source
- Why useful
- Link to topic
ABSOLUTE MUSTS
Use words like:
- validity
- reliability
- representativeness
- generalisability
The mark scheme explicitly rewards them.
HIGH LEVEL ANSWER FORMULA
Method
“Structured interviews would be used…”
Sampling
“A stratified sample would ensure representation…”
Evaluation
“This would improve representativeness and reliability…”
Context
“This is useful when studying migrants because…”
WITHOUT that final contextual sentence:
marks drop.
14 MARK EVALUATION ESSAYS
Examples:
- Family is most effective agency
- Welfare state failed to reduce poverty
These are the BIG essays.
WHAT EXAMINERS WANT
According to level descriptors:
- BOTH sides
- THREE arguments each side
- development
- evidence
- sociological concepts
- conclusion
- balance
PERFECT STRUCTURE
Intro
Define debate.
FOR SIDE
Paragraph 1
Paragraph 2
Paragraph 3
AGAINST SIDE
Paragraph 4
Paragraph 5
Paragraph 6
Conclusion
Judgement.
PARAGRAPH FORMULA
Point
→ Explain
→ Sociological theory/study/example
→ Analysis
→ Link to question
WHAT GETS LEVEL 4
According to mark scheme:
- developed points
- evidence
- analysis
- balance
- conclusion
HOW TO WRITE CONCLUSIONS
Do NOT repeat essay.
Make judgement.
Strong Conclusion Starters
- “Overall, the most convincing argument is…”
- “Although both views have merit…”
- “To a large extent…”
- “However, in modern society…”
BIGGEST REASONS STUDENTS LOSE MARKS
1. No development
Point only = half marks.
2. No sociological terminology
Use:
- socialisation
- norms
- values
- validity
- patriarchy
- capitalism
- discrimination
- identity
- stratification
3. No examples/evidence
The paper rewards evidence constantly.
4. One-sided essays
Instant cap in evaluation questions.
5. Generic answers
Need direct application to question.
TIME MANAGEMENT
Recommended
2 markers
1 minute
4 markers
4 minutes
6 markers
6–7 minutes
8 markers
10 minutes
10 markers
12–15 minutes
12 markers
15–18 minutes
14 markers
20–25 minutes
FINAL EXAM HACK
If stuck:
For ANY explain question:
Use:
- “This means that…”
- “As a result…”
For ANY evaluation:
Use:
- “However…”
- “On the other hand…”
That alone forces development and balance — exactly what Cambridge rewards.
