- Example Question:
- “To what extent did laws introduced by the British extend their rule?”
- Full-mark style answer (continuous form):
- Laws introduced by the British did play an important role in extending their control in the subcontinent. For example, the Pitt’s India Act of 1784 allowed the British government to take greater control over the East India Company, strengthening British authority. Similarly, the Permanent Settlement of 1793 ensured a fixed revenue system, which secured income and strengthened British influence over landowners. Furthermore, the Doctrine of Lapse allowed the British to annex territories where rulers had no direct heirs, further expanding their control. However, there were other factors that were equally important in extending British rule. The strength of the British army allowed them to defeat local rulers and maintain control over large areas. In addition, the decline of the Mughal Empire weakened resistance, making it easier for the British to expand. The development of railways also helped the British to move troops and resources efficiently, strengthening their control. Overall, while laws were an important factor, military strength and political weaknesses of Indian rulers were more significant in extending British rule.
